Dongzhai Farm is the source of most of our masterful black tea.
The farm was started by a Mr. Zuxiang Dong, having already made enough money in the forestry business, he wanted to shift his focus to something he had more passion for: community-minded, sustainble tea. Dongzhai Farm puts workers and the environment at it's core.
The commitment for sustainable, organic agriculture is serious and genuine. Their organic system plans are some of the most thorough our buyers have ever seen--and the commitment to organic cultivation is shared by everyone in the organization, from management to tea pluckers
The tea pluckers are given tremendous autonomy. All families that are part of the farm system are given free housing, education, and other skills training.
This sort of support and attention is the recipe for masterful tea. There is a lot of passion at Dongzhai--and it's always a pleasure to visit. Hugo Tea Company is one of few North American partners, and all of the tea that we buy from them is made exclusively for us, according to a unique baking process that we co-developed on the farm.
Yuanzhen has been a life-long farmer, but started working in tea in 2002. She's passionate and unabashedly proud of her fields--keeping the tea pluckers organized and acting as an intermediary between workers and management.
Dongzhai Farm develops and hires from within, providing support and opportunities to employees and their families. Her daughter provides the perfect example: Growing up in farm-provided housing she went to school and is now an accountant in the office.
